C. G. Conn Early Transitional Alto Sax (1931)
Conn early Transitional New Wonder 2 alto sax. Silver plated with gold plate in the bell. Neck has some scratches as seen in photo. Professionally overhauled, using Lucien Deluxe pads with Hollywood resos. Key mechanisms swedged tight. Tone holes leveled with minimal filing. All new felts and cork. Fat tone, sweet and somewhat bright. Some history-the New Wonder 2 was built from 1925-29, at which point the horn began evolving, arriving at the fully realized Conn 6M in 1936. Hence the name transitional. The New Wonder 2 is also referred to as the Chu Berry model. This particular horn is referred to as a Chu or New Wonder 2 Transitional, as it has more in common with the New Wonder 2 than the 6M. Changes include a sculpted side E key, redesigned palm keys and octave pip, and a slight alteration to the inner dimension of the neck tube. During the transitional period, some changes involved ergonomics, and some resulted in changes to tone and intonation. Horns from about 1932 on are referred to as 6M transitionals, with the designation 6M finally being stamped on the horn in 1936. A piece of history that is still being played by pros today. Comes with original mouthpiece and original case, which is in very good condition except for the handle. No mold or mildew. The item “C. G.
