WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY 2525 East Douglas Avenue Wichita, KS 67211. Earlier this year I visited the best violin shop in Europe. The owner is my brother-in-law and the shop is absolutely amazing. The workshop restores and sells the finest stringed instruments in the world. The firm is not large, but the items offered to his clients are breath-taking. As always, Marcello handed me one of his latest acquisitions. 1720’s Stradivarius cello, fine condition, iron-clad certification and documents. I have history on this particular item going back more than a century. Five or six million? ” “Gary, the price is fifteen and I think it’s a bargain at that! After I caught my wind, I mentioned to Marcel… You know, we do some violin business, but items for the concert artists are just not in our prevue. But we do sell saxophones. And, if the truth be known, some of our offerings are just as fine as a Stradivarius violin. Except there’s a lower demand and that means a much lower price….. We adjourned for an hour, split a pot of very strong tea and that was that. This one’s from 1930 and I call it a “transitional”. The low B and B-flat tone-holes are on the SAME side of the bell and there’s no silly “double touch” for the C & B-flat side keys. Our baritone is absolutely the same as the “Lady Face” (from 1934 and later) models only with simpler engraving to the bell. It’s speculation, but we believe the sax had never been lacquered until last week. We believe it was originally furnished in un-lacquered brass. When we acquired it, it appeared to have been brushed over with a rather nasty (and not original) varnish. Easy to remove, the brass polished lightly and two coats of new 2105 acrylic lacquer to protect the metal. Many or even most of the saxes from the first few years of the 1930’s were silver plated. It means keywork will be loose, possible thin spots to the body esp. Our baritone entered it’s life as an all-brass (no silver plate) beauty and it’s still the same way. Only now, it’s got a coat of new finish, so it’ll be still playing a century from now. No low A, no front high F-touch. For me, it’s dead easy…. If you’ve got to have a low A, cross your legs and stick your left heal inside the bell. If you need a front high F, play one & two keys (left hand), then cock open the high F key-touch with your little finger. Do it half a dozen times and it becomes very easy! So who used (still uses) Conn baritones? Well, for post-1947 models, almost nobody. But the true STRADIVARIUS OF BARITONE SAXOPHONES were made by them between 1930 and 1946. Gerry Mulligan, of course. Google photos of him and you’ll see him tooting on an identical baritone. See Jimmy Giuffre photos for more 12M pictures. Lots of other examples out there… Don’t take my word for it. Two now in the shop. Give me a few minutes and I’ll post the second one. Same as this, but with original lacquer and lady-face engraving. “Stradivarius of baritone saxes, ” I call these. PHOTOS SHOW WORKS IN PROGRESS. FINISHED EARLY NEXT WEEK, MORE PHOTOS SOON! I’m always happy to correspond with any and all sax-o-people! Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA.
