Selmer Paris Super Balanced Action (SBA) Alto. Serial # 36440 – Circa-1948. Original Selmer Tri-Pac Case w/ Clarinet Case. This incredible Selmer Super Balanced Action (SBA) alto is an flat-out incredible horn. The horn sings from bottom way into the altissimo registers with the legendary tone, resonance and character that the Super Balanced Action horns are famous for. Original, matching serial number neck with no pull-down. Original Selmer Tri-Pack case with clarinet case – both in great condition. It is difficult to tell if this is a factory re-lacquered horn, or an all original “closet queen”. The horn was lacquered with the pads on the horn already, which is how Selmer lacquered their horns back in the day. The engravings are crisp as well, so it leads me to believe this is an original lacquered horn. The horn experienced some kind of trauma along the way. It looked like something was dropped on the top of the bell, as when I got the horn, it was warped on both the outer and inner edges of the bell. My repairman, who’s one of the top metal-workers in region, removed the bell & bottom bow to straighten out the bell. In the below pictures, you can see the line on the inner & outer bell where the warp was straightened out. There is some minor lacquer damage from the unsoldering of the bell near the cuff / serial number. Lacquer was retouched in the area.
