Martin Handcraft Committee II (Comm. II) Lion & Crown Alto Saxophone Sax 1939
Very nice playing/good physical condition Martin Committee II Alto Saxophone on offer. The Alto was recently serviced and the action is sweet, light and fast with great response from low Bb to High F. The horn has tan leather pads in pretty good shape with slightly domed plastic resonators that seal great. The neck and body have matching serial numbers (1349XX) and form a nice seal. The neck has one good size ding but I see no evidence of pull down. No obvious re-soldered posts or tone holes etc… Are present on the horn’s body. Ergonomics for the horn are pretty good for a pre-WWII (1939) USA made horn. If you’re are used to “modern” horns Yanagisawa/Yamaha/Selmer, etc… Allow some time for adjustment, especially to the left hand pinky table. What you won’t need time to adjust too is the amazingly sweet tone that emanates from this horn, top to bottom, with intonation that is really good. The horn is pretty flexible with accepting different types of mouthpieces but I prefer one with a vintage large “scooped” chamber, low baffle… Very much personal preference and playing style. Please expect to have the Martin Comm. II Alto adjusted to personal taste with your favorite technician and budget accordingly. With that being said, the horn plays awesome right out of the new case. The body has very little lacquer remaining with a nice patina. Overall the body has a couple dings here and there, but no major dents present. The engraving shows evidence of being buffed/refinished in the past but is still easy to see. The Alto comes in a new Wolfpak branded gig bag/contoured style hard case that fits the horn very well. As always, if you’re “local” to Albuquerque/New Mexico, play testing & evaluation of this very sweet Martin Committee II Alto is encouraged.
