Martin Committee III Alto Sax 1957 with Case Genuine Closet Find Saxophone
This is a true all original closet find! I acquired this stunning Martin Committee III from the widow of the original owner who played it through high school and then stored it in a closet not in the attic or basement – I asked specifically! No smells or odors! It would be very hard to find a comparable example. Matching neck and body serial numbers. Horn, neck and case – no other items/accessories included. Officially known as a’Committee III’, this model is also commonly called simply “The Martin Alto”, as engraved on the bell. This was Martin’s pro level model for many years, and probably the most sought after of this company’s offerings. It is a very solidly built instrument, especially due to its thick, soldered tone holes (a Martin characteristic throughout the company’s history). It also has a very heavy neck with a unique front mounted tightening screw on the neck itself, rather than on the body. Other unique features include an adjustable thumb hook, and contoured left thumb rest. It is a very striking looking horn with intricate full bell length engraving which extends onto the bow, and cool circular wire key guards. Great sounding horn, sweet and lush, like a Martin should. This horn is from 1957 #202xxx. Serial number on neck matches. Has very little lacquer wear and you’d need to look real close to find anything resembling a ding. Original pads are in better than fair condition, when considering it’s 60+ years old! It would need a full repad to be in top playing condition. Original neck cork is getting dry and somewhat brittle. The neck cork is showing felt and the felt bumper on the low C is missing. All relatively minor stuff but I wanted to mention it just the same. There there are no issues that I or my tech noticed. This horn is in excellent physical, cosmetic, and playing condition. In fact, it is probably the nicest example of this model that I’ve ever come across! The body is perfectly straight, and the neck has not been pulled down or otherwise damaged. There are a couple of very tiny pings/nicks, but no significant dents or dings. There are no signs of past dent or solder work. The lacquer is in amazing condition! The lacquer is nearly 100% intact, which is very rare on these (or any)horns from the 50s. To be honest, the lacquer on most of these didn’t hold up well, so most of this model that you see are pretty ugly. This one looks great. Naturally, it does have a couple blemishes, but for 60+ y. Ears old, it looks fantastic! There is minimal scratching. The lacquer has aged to a dark honey color. This is really a gorgeous horn! It is also in great playing condition. The pads are sealing great from top to bottom, with a light buttery touch, and it plays easily throughout. The pads are original. They do show some wear, but are still soft and supple. I won’t say that a re-pad wouldn’t maybe improve how it plays, but it does play just fine as is. With that said, 60 year old pads do not have anywhere near the playing life that fresh ones do. Considering that this horn might well go to someone primarily as a collector’s item, I thought it best to leave the current pads in place. The key-work is also nice and tight with snappy action, and the pearls are not worn at all. I’m guessing that this horn was played for a year or two and then put in the closet, because it has so little wear to it, both cosmetically and mechanically speaking. This sax comes in its original Martin case. The case is also in very good condition. It has some minor exterior scuffs, but nothing serious. The inside is clean and odor free. The original metal end plug and. Are included as pictured. No other accessories. This is the perfect horn for players and collectors alike. This model was considered particularly good for rock & roll, as well as jazz. It is more in the contemporary vein, as opposed to being a classical horn. It has a very rich tonal palette. You don’t see them in this excellent condition often, if you have been looking for a fine vintage’The Martin Alto, a little research will show that you won’t find a better value on a better horn in the market.
